While working for Dr Ali I had the opportunity to learn how to design 3D printed custom bone grafts for dental surgery. I came up with an entire process that involved obtaining high resolution scan data from the patients bone, converting that data into 3D meshes, then using those meshes to design the implants with up to 1/10 of a mm accuracy. I lead mechanical engineers to the final results that were later successfully implanted in several of our patients. In addition, I designed many new tools for streamlining the design process.

To fill in the void between doing the heavy 3D work, Ive had the chance to explore my 2D side, making many visuals for marketing, presentations etc etc.

Maya, Zbrush - hard surface, organic, retopology …NURBS, high poly sculpting, Sub Divisional, low poly box modeling, data conversion, and procedural are all useful ways for creating a shape.

While working for 3Scan, I got to explore a side that I never thought I would explore… Virtual Reality! I got to test out our data in several VR programs, such as Tilt-brush, SyGlass and I also made my own “roller coaster” video that let “passengers” fly through our data in a way that im not sure will ever be done again. My process would begin with obtaining high resolution KESM (knife edge scanning microscope) data in PNG format, downsampling to roughly 2k resolution in NUKE, then applying a roto matte to the exterior shape of the desired feature. Next step would be applying different keys to separate the desired features from the background. The goal with that step was to turn the background white and the desired features black. Next step would be to remove artifacts from the scans. There were two types of artifacts, vertical and horizontal. It was possible to separate and remove many of these artifacts with additional chroma keys in NUKE. The artifacts that could not be removed with chroma keys would be hand painted out in Photoshop. Third step is to patch all the holes left by the artifact removal step. Fourth step was then exporting all the cleaned up frames to 3D Doctor to convert into a high resolution 3D meshes which could be viewed with great detail in VR, or any other 3D program. These meshes looked great when rendering so were useful in marketing and they were also very valuable for 3D bioprinting research since they were essentially exact 3D replicas of the scan data.

I got a chance to put all my 3D generalist skills to the test during short 3 year span living in LA. It was a blast seeing my name in film credits, and even winning a MTV VMA .
